Creativity Is An Essential Skill

We live in the creator economy. We all want to create cool things. Yes, by learning to code you can create cool websites, games and mobile applications and share them with friends, but that is not really what we are talking about. We are talking about thinking outside the box and developing your skills in creative thinking.

As was mentioned in
an earlier post, the future will be far less stable and secure and this lack of stability will mean that workers must be able to adapt to change. With the pace of technological change increasing year on year, the future work environment will change often. In this ever changing environment only people who have the knowledge and skills to negotiate constant change and reinvent themselves for new situations will succeed.

In short, reading, writing and arithmetic no longer suffice as the primary skills for students to learn in school. Coding teaches students to think outside the box and develop their creative abilities. Coding is accomplished through experimentation, trying novel ways of approaching a problem. Code frequently fails, but these failures are valuable teaching moments. Kids discover new ways of thinking about problems when they try a solution and it doesn’t work the way they expected. Coding builds resilient, flexible, creative minds
